Lohdi and Makar Sankranti are around the corner and I am bringing a recipe that is close to my heart. As a child, I loved Murmura Chikki and that was my favorite. No Peanut Chikki or Til Chikki could sway my love for this delicious treat.

I still remember those Chikki packed THELAS (push carts) in winter afternoons while returning back from school on the bicycle. The THELA WALAS (street vendors) used to dress in headscarves, shabby jackets or sweaters and shawls trying to make an income in that cold temperature.

Another vivid memory of those 30 years old winters, is that of small portable LOHE ki ANGEETHI (small stove made of metal). One or two street vendors would carry an angeethi on their thelas and would fuel it subtly, with small wood chips or koyla. During lazy hours, you could see the vendors, gathering around the small stove, warming up their hands and engaging in a chat.

Sometimes, some memories of childhood come back alive as is. There is no deja-vu or nostalgia about it. It is reliving the memory in flesh and blood.
