Another simple recipe for people fasting in navratris. Sama is a wild grain also known as barnyard millet. My Masi (mom’s sister), suggested this recipe to me a while ago and this is the perfect time to post about it.
Since so many centuries, this grain has been used by people observing fast. Without much ado, here is the recipe, which can otherwise be made with lots of other vegetables when not fasting. It has a nice nutty taste and bite ful texture like that of quinoa. It can be mixed with lots of dried nuts too after preparation. Adding pine nuts and cranberries will bring out the nutty flavor of the grain too.
Sama ke chawal or Sama grain : 1&1/2 cups
Oil or ghee : 1-2 tsp
Cumin seeds : 1/4 tsp
Red chillies : 2 broken
Peanuts : dry roasted and crushed
Cilantro, ginger and green chillies mix : 1 tsp made in food processor
Rock salt and black pepper to taste
Water : 2&1/4 cups
Warm oil in pan. Add cumin seeds and let it crackle.
Add red chillies and reduce the flame to low medium.
Add Sama grains. Add salt and black pepper to taste. Add water and boil at medium low till water is evaporated.
Take it off the flame. Add crushed peanuts and cilantro ginger chili mix.
Gently fold it in and enjoy warm.
