These golden beauties are normally deep fried. It is a traditional sweet which is so simple in ingredients and method and made for festivals or just like that. We are in the month of celebrations, where Dieali, the Festival of Lights is approaching fast. Today is another auspicious day of Karva Chauth, where wives pray for their husbands :). I made the Mal Puas again but did not fry them at all. I prepared the batter and grilled like a pan cake on griddle. Believe me, it is equally tasty with fennel flavors. The best part it can be prepared for breakfast also, without eggs and no leavening agent.

Here is the recipe :

Ingredients :

Whole wheat flour : 1/2 cup
Sugar : 6 tsp
Fennel seeds : 1/2 tsp
Yogurt or buttermilk : 1/4 cup
Water : 1/3 cup or more
Oil : 1/2 tbsp

Recommended : non stick or hard anodized pan for grill or shallow frying.

Method :

Make a batter with the above mentioned ingredients leaving oil. The batter should be little thick like pancake batter consistency. Set aside for 15-20 minutes.

Heat the oil in big pan or griddle. Drop 1 tbsp or more as desired batter on oiled griddle or pan. Let it cook 2 minutes each side on low flame.

Take it out and enjoy with warm coffee or tea or just pop like that. You will love it :). If pleased, sprinkle with some powdered sugar or honey or maple syrup.

    1. You will love it Chintal. I pan griddled them like pancakes because it absorbs a lot if oil when fried… As a kid it was fun… But I can’t bear it when I see so much oil been slurped by one :).
