When I first tried the Soda Bread, the first bite reminded of ENGLISH SCONE or BUTTERMILK BISCUIT that is slightly sweeter. It is often served with butter, jams, jellies and preserves on the side.
The soda bread texture is also slightly different from regular bread as it is a rather dense bread. The outside gets perfectly crushed out with the air fryer, while the inside stays tender.

What are the ingredients of Air Fryer Irish Soda Bread?
Although the Soda Bread requires about 9-10 ingredients but all of them are pantry staples.
All Purpose Flour – I used this flour. I haven’t tried whole wheat flour or gluten-free flour so I can not vouch for these.
Raisins – Although I used the brown raisins, but you can use golden raisins or currants if you want. I have seen folks using dried sweetened cranberries as well.
Buttermilk – Either you can use store bought buttermilk or make it at home. If you want to make it at home, then check the recipe card notes section fof the 2 ingredients 1 step recipe.
Butter – Use Cold Butter for the recipe to create a good crumbly texture. Although a lot of recipes do not require butter but I like adding Butter to the recipe. It keeps the Irish Soda Bread moist and not too dry.
Baking Soda and Baking Powder– Since this is a no-fermentaion bread, baking soda and Baking Powder are one of the main rising agents. Use good quality Baking Soda and Baking Powder.
Sugar – Since it is a slightly sweet bread, sugar is added ot the bread.
Vanilla Extract – Again use a good quality vanilla extract.

How to make Irish Bread?
It is so easy to make Irish Soda Bread at home with few pantry staples. And also note, every regiona nd home has its own recipe.
Home made Buttermilk
If you are using market bought buttermilk then skip this part. But if you want to make it at home, then use this recipe. Take 1 cup of milk and add 1 tbsp distilled white vinegar to it. Do not mix it at all. Let it stand like this for 5 minutes. Your home made Buttermilk is ready to be used. It seems curdled and that is alright.
Putting the Bread Dough together
- First cut the cold butter into small 1/2 inch cubes.
- Then take a Large Mixing Bowl and add All Purpose Flour to it. Spread it out and then add cold butter pieces to the flour. Rub the butter into flour with both the hands till the flour looks crumbly. Look at the left picture above.
- Once the butter is well incorporated into the flour, then add Baking Soda, Baking Powder, salt, sugar, cinnamon powder, Raisins and vanilla extract to it.
- Now add Buttermilk. Gently mix all the ingredients. It will make a messy and sticky dough. Add 2-3 tbsp more of all purpose flour if the dough is hard to handle. It will not be a perfect dough but a loose sticky dough. THAT IS OK. Check out the right picture above.
- Bring the dough together in a loose round shape.
Air Frying the Soda Bread
- Pre heat the air fryer if your air fryer calls for it at 300*F. My Instant Vortex Plus 6 quart Air Fryer requires pre-heating.
- Further place the sticky dough ball on the air fryer parchment paper. Place this inside the air fryer basket. Make a rough X at the top of the bread for rising and even baking. Check the pictures above.
- Air fry it for about 35-40 minutes till done. Remove the parchment paper after 30 minutes so that the bread gets cooked evenly and becomes firm at the bottom also.
- You will know that it is done when you tap the bottom of the bread, it will sound hollow. My Irish Soda Bread got cooked in air fryer in exactly 40 minutes.
- When you can insert a toothpick into the dough’s center, and it comes out clean, remove it from the air fryer.
- Once done, remove from the air fryer and then transfer on cooling rack. Once cooled, serve it or store it.
- The time will vary according to the model of the air fryer. Keep an eye and start checking at 30 minutes.
Serving Suggestion
It is great to serve the Irish Soda Bread with Butter and Jam. My favorite jam to go with it is Strawberry Jam or Orange Marmalade.
Oven Baked Recipe
You can easily choose to bake it in the oven. Prep the Irish Bread Dough as instructed above.
Preheat the oven at 350*F. And then bake it for 45-50 minutes till done.
Pro Tips to make Irish Soda Bread in Air Fryer
- Do not over work the dough. Try not to knead it. Just gather the dough gently and shape it.
- Always make a X at the top of the dough for good rising and even baking.
- I would highly recommend using the parchment paper at the bottom. But if you do not have it, then grease the base of the air fryer basket or else it would stick.
