Easy Air Fryer Apple Strudel Recipe with just 2 Main Ingredients

Pittsburgh is the city of Apples and makes one of the best Apple Pies in the country. And other desserts like these STRUDELS also top the chart.

One can find varieties of apples throughout the year. And in the peak season, apple picking is one of the main family event.

I made a huge batch of APPLE PIE FILLING in my INSTANT POT the other day. Though it is not the conventional filling for Apple Strudel, nonetheless a very delicious one to fill the strudel.

The delicate flaky texture of the pastry when gives way to the warm apple filling, it is no less than a food heaven.

People often make the flaky delicate pastry at home. But I have taken a short cut and have used Store bought Puff Pastry Sheet. Phyllo Sheet can be used as well.

What is Strudel?

[Information Source]

A strudel is a type of layered pastry with a filling that is usually sweet. It became popular in the 18th century throughout the Habsburg Empire.

Strudel is part of Austrian cuisine but also common in the other Central European cuisines.

There are many popular kind of Strudels available, like Sour Cherry, Sweet Cherry, Nut filled, Apricot, Plum and whatnot. But Apple Strudel is the most popular kind.

A strudel can also be Savory filled with Potatoes, Cabbage, Pumpkin, Sauerkraut etc.

Recipe Ingredients

I literally used 3 ingredients to make this recipe.

  • Puff Pastry Sheet – I love Wewalka brand. It is about 15×10 inches in dimension and yields 6 Strudels of medium size. But you can use any like Pillsbury, Pepperidge Farm or any that you can find. You can use crescent dough as well for this recipe. Make sure to use a flaky delicate pastry for this recipe. If you want, make it at home.
  • Apple Pie Filling (home-made) – You can buy canned apple pie filling if you want. But home made is the best and so easy to make. It comes handy in many desserts like Pies, Galettes, Top your ice-cream, etc.
  • Butter

What kind of Pastry can I use for the recipe?

Puff Pastry is the ideal one to use for this recipe.

Most importantly, the Puff Pastry sheet that you are using should be at room temperature.

If the pastry is frozen, then either thaw it overnight in the refrigerator. Or thaw it at room temperature till ready to use.

I love using pastry sheets from refrigerated section of the store instead of the frozen. Makes life simpler.

You may use ready to bake Croissant sheet or Phyllo Sheet as well. Just make sure to use a flaky sheet to work with.

How to make Strudel with Apple Pie Filling? (watch the video)

  1. Cut pastry into even squares of 5×5 or 6×6 with a sharp kitchen scissor. You may make even smaller squares if desired. You will probably have 6 squares of Puff Pastry to work with.
  2. Work on 1 pastry square at a time. Take a square and place on parchment paper.
  3. Spread apple pie filling in the center of the square, lengthwise. Leaving equal amount of pastry empty on both the sides.
  4. Make 8-10 cuts on each side of the filling as if pastry arms. These will be used to make a braid.
  5. Now start braiding these arms on either side on top of the filling. (watch the video)
  6. Use the bottom 2 to seal. Press down gently.
  7. Use Pastry Brush and Brush gently with some butter (at room temperature).
  8. Finish the other squares like-wise.
  9. Now place 3 at a time in the Air Fryer Basket laced with parchment paper. If you have a larger air fryer, you can air fry more or all at the same time.
  10. Air fry till golden. Take out with a flat spatula carefully. Sprinkle with some sugar if desired.
  11. Let rest for few minutes on cooling rack to firm up the bottom of the pastry. DONE!

TIP : Since Puff Pastry is very delicate to work with, handle it gently. The best way is to work with it on a parchment paper to avoid sticking while braiding or transferring to the air-fryer.

Air fryer Pastry

Can I make the Strudel in the Oven?

Strudels are baked in the oven. This is the air-fryer version. Therefore, you can certainly bake these in the oven.

How long do the Apple Strudels last?

You can keep it at room temperature for up to 2 days. Be sure to cover it loosely with foil or plastic wrap. Strudel will also keep for an additional 3 days in the refrigerator, covered. But make sure to consume at the earliest. Since it is a delicate pastry, it will loose the texture.

Can I freeze it?

I wouldn’t suggest freezing the finished product. But in case you want to freeze it before air frying or baking it, then you may try that.

How to heat the Refrigerated Strudel?

Put it in the air fryer at 350*F and heat for 5-7 minutes or till warm enough. DO NOT MICROWAVE or else it will go soggy.

How do you eat Apple Strudel?

Cool for few minutes before eating. Serve plain or with ice cream.

What is the difference between Apple Strudel and Apple Pie?

Strudel is usually made with a very flaky crust like a puff pastry. The crust is wrapped around the filling. They are usually baked on a baking sheet. Pies may have only a bottom crust or only a top crust or both.

How to finish the Strudel?

Traditionally egg wash is used to give it the desired sheen, but melted/room temperature BUTTER can be used as well.
