What is a Calzone?

[Resource – here]

A calzone is an Italian baked oven folded pizza, often described as a turnover made from leavened dough. It originated from Naples in 18th century.

You can stuff these with vegetables of your choice, salami, pepperoni, ham, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, ricotta cheese or an egg. It can be a solo filling or a combination of few.

Is Calzone different from Stromboli?

Where Calzones are shaped in half crescents, Stromboli are cylindrical or rectangular shaped.

Originally calzone do not contain any sauce inside. It is a dry filling.

However, I have added some sauce to my filling.

What kind of Pizza dough can I use for this recipe?

You can use either Home-made Pizza dough or store bough dough. You can also purchase your dough from the local pizzeria. Many places will sell the dough happily when asked.

I have made this recipe with 100% All purpose flour as well as half & half that is 1/2 all purpose flour and 1/2 whole wheat flour. The recipe turns our well with both the combinations. You can pick and choose per your convenience.
