Quick Vietnamese Iced Coffee
If you are thinking that this is an authentic recipe for Vietnamese Iced Coffee, then let me tell you that it is not. It is Quick Vietnamese Iced Coffee, a quicker version to the original. Honestly, I have been meaning to try Vietnamese Iced Coffee for a while. I finally tried it at a local Viet Pho Place and I loved it.
If you ask me about the authentic recipe, then go check out White on Rice Couple ‘s Easy Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I love this blog for their easy take on authentic Asian recipes.
While they posted “Easy” version, I am bringing the “Quick” version. You will love it for the fact that it is just a 2 INGREDIENTS RECIPE. Just a warning in advance – It is rich, decadent and so addictive. 😉
Vietnamese Iced Coffee is known as ca phe da or café da in Vietnamese, which literally means Iced Coffee. Vietnamese Iced Coffee is made with using medium to coarse ground DARK ROAST Veitnam grown Coffee and a metal DRIP FILTER, known as phin ca phe. After the hot water is added, the drip filter releases drops of hot coffee slowly into a cup. This finished cup of hot coffee is then quickly poured into a glass full of ice making the finished Vietnamese iced coffee.
A popular way to drink Vietnamese coffee is cà phê sữa đá, which is Vietnamese iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk. This is done by filling up the coffee cup with about 2-3 tablespoons (more if you like your coffee on the sweeter side) of sweetened condensed milk prior to the drip filter process. [This above information is extracted from Wikipedia]
As you see that neither I was born in Vietnam nor do I have authentic metal coffee drip filter, I did what I do the best. I made the Quick and easy version with whatever I had in hand. I used Brewed Iced Coffee, which I had picked from local coffee brewers from the Farmers’ Market and canned condensed milk. Voila, you can’t beat that, can you? The result was this amazing Iced Coffee, Viet Style made with American Ingredients. The only drawback was – lot of stirring. Well, be smart and use blender instead of stirring separately.
